Save our hospital pharmacies!

People with serious illnesses, like cancer and diabetes, often get their medicines from hospital pharmacies, even if they’re being treated at home. But now, the NHS Trust in charge of Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Furness General Hospital and Westmorland General Hospital want to sell this service to a private company.

The trust says that it wants the new service to offer a better ‘retail experience’ for patients. But hospitals aren’t shops. When we visit one, we’re patients who need treatment, not consumers who want to spend money. We need world class quality care, not a better retail experience.

So why is the NHS Trust doing this? They’re not talking about ‘care’ or ‘quality of treatment’ but about ‘cost effectiveness’ and value for money. While the private companies who will run this service are going to make a tidy profit, our service will be run on the cheap.

This is why we have set up a group to campaign to stop the sale of NHS pharmacy services in the area. If enough of us come together, we can help pressure the Chief Executive of Morecambe Bay Hospital Trust to stop the sale of this vital community service and keep pharmacies inside the NHS.
